This report presents a comparative review, in 71 countries, of the readiness of the education sectors to respond to, manage and mitigate the impact of HIV/AIDS. In particular, the categories of review of include:
- Ministry of Education HIV/AIDS structures
- enabling environment for an effective response
- HIV/AIDS mainstreaming
- human resource adaptation to the impact of HIV/AIDS
- workplace programmes
- the curriculum
- responses aimed at the infected and affected
- partnership development in response to HIV/AIDS
- research guiding the response to HIV/AIDS in the education sector
The results find that there is widespread acknowledgement of HIV and AIDS as factors affecting education systems and requiring attention on the part of ministries of education. However, in key countries or in key areas in many countries, the level of resources and concrete action is far from adequate given the scale and character of the problem.
